7 Ways to Stay Productive When You're Stressed

When you’re going through a stressful situation or tough time, it can be hard to focus on your work. But the reality is that even when our personal lives may be in turmoil, we still need to get stuff done—and do it well. So how can you remain productive when stress at home strikes? These seven actionable strategies can help.

1. Manage Technology

It’s easy enough to get distracted when life is going well. When difficult situations arise, our focus can fracture even further. The key is to manage our attention by managing our technology, like turning off notifications from social apps or setting a time limit feature on your phone.

2. Take Rejuvenating Breaks

These breaks might include anything from taking a walk to listening to a guided meditation. If you don't have planned breaks, you'll take little ones to ruminate about your situation and likely feel more anxious.

3. Prioritize Purpose

When your attention shifts to questions and concerns about your situation, refocus on what you care about in your work. Think about the greater purpose of each project and task:

  • How will your project help people?
  • What’s the desired outcome of your meeting?
  • What can you learn from what you’re reading?

4. Tend to the Self-Care Triad

Anxiety is exhausting, no matter the source. So, whatever your specific situation, you’re likely feeling physically fatigued. The self-care triad includes sleep, nutrition, and exercise. And it’s especially critical in building up our mental and physical stamina.

5. Be Patient With Yourself

Acknowledge your stressful situation and try to be supportive and understanding with yourself, says Laura Torres, a mental health counselor in North Carolina. For instance, you might tell yourself:

  • “Of course this is taking me longer to do—I’m feeling anxious about my mom’s health.”
  • “It’s okay that I didn’t finish that task.”
  • “I’m feeling overwhelmed, so I’ll take it one small step at a time today.”

6. Perform During Your Peak

Are you typically most productive in the mornings or afternoons? When possible, try to spend your best time making progress on your projects.

7. Practice Deep Breathing

Take just 30 seconds throughout the day to practice deep breathing. Slowing your breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which signals to your body that you are safe.
